After installation or update of your KMS server, activate it with CSVLK (so called KMS Host Key). You can get this key on Microsoft Volume License (VLSC) website. The key you need is called Windows Srv 2016 DataCtr/Std KMS and is located in License - Relationship Summary - Product Keys. Then install the key using this command. To get past this and activate on Server 2016, we will install and activate the KMS host by using an elevated command prompt. First we need to install the Volume License Packs. For this post you will only need to install the 2016 pack for what we are going to do, but I have installed both Office 2013 and 2016 license packs, it doesn’t hurt.

KMS activation can be blocked by a firewall. Please be sure that any firewalls between the client machine and the KMS server are open to incoming and outgoing traffic on TCP port 1688.

To use this method, first install the software (Windows or Microsoft Office). As part of that process you'll be informed that you have 30 days to activate the product. Complete the steps below during that 30-day period.

This method assumes that Windows or Office has never been activated on this machine before. If your machine had previously been activated with the earlier MAK activation method, please instead follow the instructions to switch from MAK to KMS activation.

2. In the elevated Command Prompt window, verify that the current directory is C:WindowsSystem32. If it is not, type

   cscript slmgr.vbs /skms kms01.cit.cornell.edu
   and press .

4. Type the following command:
